Should we move all subpages of Translation requests/... or not?

I think the collapsed/hidden instructions for un-subscribing at MediaWiki:Translatorsignup-summary are unclear. Does that mean "uncheck all the boxes in the 'Preferred contact methods' section" and then click the big blue button?

Also, is there a way to purge inactive translators from the list, or skip them when sending notifications? I wouldn't want to send requests to people who haven't edited for a year. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 19:25, 24 October 2022 (UTC)

Removing either all languages or contact methods (or both) will effectively unsubscribe.

FWIW, removing all languages doesn’t appear to be possible (“This value is required”). So I guess removing all contact methods is the only effective way to unsubscribe. Galaktos (talk) 18:23, 14 September 2023 (UTC)

APatro very kindly purged long-time inactive users from the list. Here at Meta-Wiki, just over 60% of people receiving messages either hadn't ever contributed a translation here, or weren't active any longer. The list will get updated again in a few weeks. I may have misunderstood your comment, but want to clarify that the script removes subscribers who are inactive across all Wikimedia wikis for a period of 1 year and not specifically Meta-Wiki or any other particular wiki.

Correcting spelling error in currency (%amount%)

Somewhat unsure if this is the right place to ask, but I'll try:

I was correcting some fundraising text translations and noticed that there is a consistent spelling error in a currency unit ("kr" should be "kr."; the currency is Danish kroner, ISO code DKK; the spelling "kr" is never correct under any circumstances, cf. the official spelling rule).

So I found the texts with the spelling errors, but it just says %amount% at those places. Where can I correct the currency label? Or is it hardcoded somewhere? Jhertel (talk) 11:10, 13 May 2025 (UTC)

Ah, I see. Good to know and see the reason, and good you fixed that. Thank you!

I now realize that this fix created a new problem, because now two periods can appear at the end of sentences if the sentence ends in an %amount%. So some sort of special function would be needed in the translated text to remove the potential trailing double period, as the Danish orthography rules state that two periods are not allowed at the end of a sentence and should be collapsed into one, in the case when the sentence ends in an abbreviation like "kr." with a trailing period. You cannot have a sentence that ends in two periods in Danish.

This situation is not just theoretical; it is present in three of the fundraising texts (search for "%amount%." including the trailing period). I guess these texts will now, after your correction, result in strings like "Donér 20 kr.." with two trailing periods, breaking the orthography rules again, just in a different way.

I apologize for this on behalf of the Danish language.

While this can be "solved" or at least circumvented with a hack in the translation by omitting the final period of the sentence ("Donér %amount%" instead of "Donér %amount%."), this will look wrong for the translators, since the final period will seem to be missing. Also, will the currency always be DKK when the text is in Danish? Or can there be situations where the currency is not DKK, but the text is Danish? If so, the final period of the sentence will be entirely missing if the period is left out in the translation and the currency doesn't end in a period.

So, to perfect it, a function like REMOVE_DUPLICATE_TRAILING_PERIOD would be needed in the translation, like "{REMOVE_DUPLICATE_TRAILING_PERIOD:Donér %amount%.}" or similar. I don't know much of the technical possibilities of that, and how difficult that would be. Jhertel (talk) 22:50, 14 May 2025 (UTC)
